Socrates A. Adamopoulos, age 90, of Lynn died at his home after a brief illness, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Ann (Phillips) Adamopoulos with whom he shared 58 years of marriage.
Born in Peabody he was the son of the late Anthony and Virginia (Argyrakis) Adamopoulos (both originated from Messina, Greece), and a sibling of his 4 late brothers (Arthur of Groveland, MA, Peter of La Crescenta, CA, and Charles and Ernest of Peabody, MA). He graduated from Peabody High School. Socrates served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a letter carrier for the U. S. Postal Service for many years until he retired in 1990. He owned, trained, and raced horses for several years. He followed the news and sports, loved football, baseball and horse racing, as well as bidding the Showcase on “The Price is Right”. He also enjoyed bowling. He cherished spending time with his family especially his grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He is survived by one daughter Virginia and her husband William Fletcher of Lynn, one son Louis and his wife Susan of Lynn, three grandchildren, Melanie Adamopoulos of Lynn, Joel Fletcher and his fiancé Jessica of Saugus, Staceyann and her husband George Markos of Salisbury, four great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Service Details: Private funeral services were held at St. George Greek Orthodox Church on Wednesday, burial followed at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Peabody. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association at www.lung.org, or in memory of him to St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church, 54 So. Common St. Lynn, MA 01902.
