Janice D. Bettger, age 83, of Salem, formerly of Swampscott, died Tuesday evening at her home, surrounded by her family, after a brief illness. She was the wife of James R. Bettger with whom she shared 62 years of marriage.
Born in Lynn she was the daughter of the late Irving E. and Dorothy B. (Hall) Doliber. Jan attended Swampscott schools and graduated from Swampscott High School, Class of 1954. She also graduated from Burdett Business School, Class of 1956, and attended Boston University. She was a teacher’s aide at Tiny Tots in Lynn, a preschool teacher at the North Shore Jewish Community Center in Marblehead for 37 years and finished her career at the Marblehead YMCA. Jan was a member of the St. Stephens Methodist Church in Marblehead, and a longtime volunteer at the Salem Senior Center. She loved music and spending time with her family.
In addition to her husband she is survived by one daughter Julie E. and her husband John R. Burke of Beverly, two sons Jeffrey E. Bettger of Lynn, Jonathan R. and his wife Patricia L. Bettger of Somerset, MA, two grandchildren Robert and James E. Bettger, one great granddaughter Madisyn Bettger, several nieces and nephews, and her beloved Gracie. She is predeceased by her sister Beryl I. Smith who died August 25th of this year.
Service Details: Jan’s visiting hours will be held at the Parker Funeral Home 35 Franklin St. Lynn on Sunday from 12:00 – 1:00 PM to which relatives and friends are invited to attend. Please wear masks and adhere to the guidelines for social distancing recommended by the CDC and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Memorial service will be private. Burial of ashes will take place in Swampscott Cemetery at a later date. Please make memorial donations in Jan’s name to Care Dimensions (Hospice), 75 Sylvan St. Danvers, MA 01923.
