Douglas Small Obituary

Douglas R. Small, age 64 of Tewksbury, formerly of Lynn, died unexpectedly October 31st at Winchester Hospital after undergoing hip replacement surgery. He was the husband of Elizabeth “Beth” (Saunders) Small with whom he shared 31 years of marriage.

Born in Salem he was the son of the late Kenneth E. and Agnes “Nan” (Semple) Small.

Doug attended Lynn schools and graduated from Lynn English High School, Class of 1977. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Class of 1982. He was a member of the Theta Chi Epsilon Fraternity at WPI. Doug viewed his fraternity brothers as family. Emily tried to get the secret handshake so many times but Doug, true to his pledge would never give in.

Doug was employed as a Civil Engineer at the Massachusetts Department of Transportation in the Traffic department for the past 40 years.

Doug lived for his fantasy football league and on Monday night his team was in first place for the first time in years. Being the commissioner of his Fantasy Football League, draft night was a full production.  Doug’s checklist for draft night was Wi-Fi, hot spot, iPad, iPhone, everyone out of the room and a cold six pack of Bud Light.  There wasn’t anyone that wasn’t Doug’s friend. He enjoyed bowling in Wakefield; however, when the league stopped bowling they decided to go to the 99 every month to get together. He was active in the Lynn English High School Reunion Committee, and constantly shared stories about how much he loved high school and his friends. He also loved spending time with his family and friends, and nothing better than getting away and relaxing with his loved ones.

In addition to his wife, Doug is survived by his daughter Emily Louise May Small of Tewksbury, his son Kenneth “Ken” Small of Tewksbury, two brothers James K. and his wife Cheryl Small of Reading, Robert A. and his wife Michelle Small of N. Reading. His loving nieces and nephews (Michelle, Dustin, Cal, Lauren, Dylan, Amanda, Steven, Lauren, Zach, Ashley, Kevin, Jillian, Alexa, Emily Grace, and Jay). Doug also leaves his dogs sweet Josie and annoying Rocky.

Doug is in heaven having a Crown Royal with his Dad and a Baileys with his Mom. And maybe even a Manhattan with Beth’s mom Emily and Jess.
