Mr. John I. Murray, age 98 years, of Salem, formerly of Lynn and Swampscott, died Thursday July 27th at the Chelsea Soldier’s Home after a brief illness.  Born in Mill Creek, New Brunswick, Canada, he was the son of the late Allister and Letitia (Bears) Murray.  He moved to Rhode Island at a young age, attended schools in Bristol, RI and graduated from Colt Memorial High School, Class of 1937.  John served in the US Army from 1940 – 1941, and in the US Navy from 1942 – 1944 during WW II.  He moved to Swampscott in 1961, lived in Lynn from 1967 – 1979, and then moved to Salem.  John worked in the turbine division of General Electric for over twenty years, retiring in 1981.  He was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Swampscott and the AMVETS Post #161.  He volunteered at My Brothers Table soup kitchen and the Greater Lynn Mental Health and Retardation Association.  John participated in many walks for Cancer, and HAWC.  A Boston sports fan, he enjoyed watching the Patriots, Red Sox and Celtics.  He was an avid reader, was involved in progressive politics, and donated to many charitable causes. 

 

John is survived by three sons David R. Murray of Lewiston, ME, Jon J. Murray of Roxbury, CT, Donald W. Murray of Groveland, two daughters Susan R. Murray of Salem, Merrilee A. Murray-Haggerty of Lynn, one sister Ruth E. Johnson of Yarmouthport, MA, five grandchildren, four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  He was also close friend of the late Evelyn Dresser, and brother of the late Alexander H., William H., and George Murray.  

 

Service Information: Visiting hours are on Monday from 3:00 – 7:00 PM at the Parker Funeral Home, 35 Franklin St. Lynn.  Funeral services will be held at the Parker Funeral Home on Tuesday at 11:00 AM.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to My Brothers Table, 98 Willow St. Lynn, MA 01901 – or at www.mybrotherstable.org
